X-ray radiography uses ionizing radiations or X-rays to image the human body or a part of the human body. Chest X-ray is used to examine the chest and its contents to diagnose certain symptoms or to detect an underlying pathology. Chest X-ray uses minimal doses of X-ray’s to image the structures which are in the vicinity of the chest. The procedure is easy and is performed either by a radiologist, trained technicians or doctors who are trained to perform X-ray scanning.
When is a chest X-Ray advised ?
A chest X-ray is advised either to diagnose a symptomatic or an asymptomatic condition which is in the chest. If you present with the few below mentioned symptoms, your doctor might advise you to get a chest X-ray.
- Pain in the chest
- Difficulty in breathing
- Injury to the chest
- Persistent cough
A chest X-ray is also advised to primarily confirm or diagnose the below mentioned diseases.
- Lung emphysema
- Collection of fluid in and around the lungs
- Collection of air in and around the lungs
- Heart anomaly
- Heart disease
- Cancer of the lung or heart
- Pneumonia
- To detect aneurysm around major vessels of heart
- To position medical devices and position them
When is a chest X-Ray not advised ?
A chest X-ray is usually the primary mode of investigation to confirm a diagnosis, but occasionally a chest X-ray is not enough to confirm a condition and your doctor might advise other confirmatory tests. Chest X-ray is not performed in women who are expecting or are pregnant and in individuals who are at a higher risk of developing cancer from radiation exposure. Ask your radiologist or treating doctor about the contraindications of a chest X-ray test.
How does an X-ray Machine look like ?
An X-ray machine is usually wall mounted, box shaped apparatus with an adjustable angle for taking pictures at various positions. Nowadays portable X-ray machines are also available which are used during a surgical procedure or in patients who cannot be immobilized.
How do you prepare for a chest X-ray ?
Not much preparation is required as it is performed as an outpatient procedure and you will be asked to remove any pieces of jewelry, remove your clothes and change into a hospital gown.
What happens during a chest X-Ray procedure ?
Once you have changed into the hospital gown, you will be taken to the X-ray room where you will be made to stand with your chest pressing against the X-ray film and radiation will be exposed for a pre-decided period. The lateral side of the chest is also imaged with the same technique, just the film is placed closer to the side of your chest. The radiologist might ask you to wear lead aprons to protect the other parts of your body from radiation exposure. In case you are not able to stand during the chest X-ray, you will be made to lie on your back on a table with an X-ray film closer to your chest, and the X-ray will be taken.
Who interprets the chest X-Ray report ?
The report is either handed over immediately or as per the hospital’s policy. The radiologist interprets the report and the same can be explained to you by your treating doctor as well.
What are the risks and complications associated with chest X-Ray procedure ?
Chest X-ray is a rather safe procedure but there are always miniscule chances of cancer development due to heavy radiation exposure. You should consult your treating doctor or radiologist to understand the risks of chest X-ray in detail.
