SEEG test or Stereoelectroencephalogram is a specialized diagnostic test which is advised in individuals who are affected with epilepsy to determine the areas from where the seizures originate in the brain. SEEG test or SEEG surgery is a minimally invasive procedure which is used to identify the site of seizure origin in epileptic patients. SEEG test of offers a new ray of hope in epileptic patients who do not respond to medical treatments.
When is a SEEG test advised ?
A SEEG test is advised in patients who have focal epilepsy and have complex partial seizures. Such affected individuals usually do not respond to medical treatments. SEEG test is also advised in individuals who have epilepsy of undetermined origin and in individuals who can be posted for an epilepsy surgery. SEEG test is not advised in patients who have generalized epilepsy.
Can SEEG test be performed in children ?
Yes, SEEG test can be performed in children and adults who are affected by epileptic seizures on careful and detailed clinical examination.
How do you prepare for a SEEG test ?
Your neurologist or epilepsy specialist will do a thorough examination of your overall health, signs and symptoms of epilepsy. You will be asked to undergo a cerebral angiogram procedure before the SEEG test to check the blood supply to the brain.
What happens during a SEEG test ?
After a cerebral angiogram is completed, your interventional neurologists will make very tiny incisions (about 10-20) on your scalp (no bleeding occurs) to help in placement of electrodes or grids to record the activity of the brain. The procedure lasts for about 6-7 hours but you might be asked to stay in the hospital for a few days after the test is completed. An EEG (electroencephalogram) is also recorded during the test.
The grids used during SEEG test help in localizing the origin of seizures in the brain. Usually the patients are monitored for a week to check the origin of seizures but your stay might be prolonged if the doctor suggests.
The main aim of a SEEG test is to locate the site of seizure origin, as if the correct location is traced it will be of great help during the surgical procedure.
What are the risks associated with SEEG test ?
SEEG test is a minimally invasive diagnostic test and hence the complications are rare. But, one can rarely be affected by a stroke during the angiogram procedure performed before the SEEG test. This is a newer test and hence you are advised to ask your treating neurologist or epilepsy specialist to explain to you the risks, benefits and outcome of the procedure in detail.
