Bipolar disorder is a condition affecting the brain which causes extreme shifts in moods and behavior of the affected individual. The affected individual may experience extreme highs and lows during a certain period of time. The bipolar disorder can be of Type I (severe form), Type II (mild form), cyclothymic disorder (cyclic periods of depression) or bipolar disorder induced due to medication and disorders like Cushing’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis.

What are the causes of bipolar disorder ?
Bipolar Disorder is a condition whose exact cause is not known but is attributed to change in the physical activity of the brain, genetic susceptibility, family history and stress. Individuals who are affected are mostly in their teenage or adolescent age.

What are the symptoms of bipolar disorder ?
As mentioned earlier the individuals affected with Bipolar Disorder experience emotional and behavioral highs and lows.

The highs may include feeling happy, overactive, restless, not able to concentrate, altered speech, insomnia (inability to sleep), poor judgmental abilities, increased alcohol and drug abuse, unrealistic plans, moments of anger and hostility and high sex drive.

The Lows may include extreme sadness, depression, feeling of crying, weakness, increased sleeping duration, feeling dull, lethargic and tired, loss of weight or weight gain, inability to concentrate and suicidal tendencies.

The symptoms may differ from individual to individual and depending upon the type or severity of the Bipolar disorder. The diagnosis of the same is made by a specialist by a detailed evaluation of your signs and symptoms.

What is the treatment of bipolar disorder ?
Bipolar disorder is usually managed by a combination of antidepressants, antipsychotic drugs along with psychotherapy or talk therapy.

Bipolar disorder day (each year on March 30th) is specially marked to increase awareness about the disease amongst general population, so that individuals who are affected with the same can lead a normal life. Awareness about the disease can eliminate the social stigma regarding the same and help the general population in accepting the affected individuals in the society without any social bias. Increased awareness will also help the affected individuals to get treated for the same and lead a normal life.
